The Faerie Queene (Book 1) by Edmund Spencer
In this book, the 16th century poet Edmund Spencer originates the classic tale of what we today know as “St. George and the Dragon”. Written in iambic verse, Spencer tells of the travels and trials of the Redcrosse Knight and the fair lady Una as their adventures lead them through battles both physical and spiritual. It is a fast-moving poem which pleased me, and Spencer does not excessively describe the actual land over which the heroes travel, but gets to the destinations and most exiting parts in a very efficient manner. Though it is not written with modern English spelling and expressions, I found it a very entertaining and addicting read. I recommend reading a copy that includes footnotes, as the language takes some getting used to. I thought this book was greatly rewarding and I highly recommend giving it a try.
