Learning to read can be done simply. It takes two things: time and patience. You don’t need fancy programs. Just good ‘ol persistence. Keep a mindset of consistent practice over a long period of time. Some children take off quickly and some need more time, and that is perfectly normal. Keep it light, engaging, and short so it doesn’t become drudgery. Be excited for any interest or success in deciphering sounds or words whenever that happens- in the car, at the grocery store, watching a football game.
Keep it simple– because… it is.

First steps:
Be curious and play with letter shapes and sounds
-everywhere- road signs, cereal boxes, mail, on football helmets.
– rhyme- ‘sat’ sounds like ‘bat’ sounds like ‘mat’….
-draw the sounds, play with magnet letters
Next steps:
Find early reading books and read together.
-help student sound the letters
-point to/tell them the ‘tricky’ (sight) words.
-go slow, one page might be enough.
